I’ve seen most of the director’s film, including ‘The Genius Club’, but this is the best film by far. He confirms his seriousness of intent and his enormous respect for his audience. I really focus on the humanity of every movie and this film has gobs of humanity flowing through the entire movie. The theme of sacrifice, faith and devotion seemed almost futuristic in the presentation. I was glued to the screen and realized how beautiful the ugliness of a supposed noble time really was without Christ. The acting was also superb and the way the story turned out was unexpected. I also think the way the movie is directed displays an almost religious theme to it and the actors seemed drawn into the his vision. The ending made you think about your faith and convictions knowing the choices these people made seem unreasonable then. But not now. To quote the Bible from the book of Peter 5:10, “And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm, and steadfast”. I give ‘The Islands’ two thumbs up. High recommend.This is the third time that I have seen this movie and the thing that always stuns me about it is that it is made entirely in the Hawaiian language. As someone deeply ingrained in Hawaiian history (ancestors going back a thousand years -e hele hope ana), I’m so proud that someone finally did a full-length feature film with the majority in the Native Hawaiian language!!!!
 

Now that I have got that off of my chest, I can say that this is such a powerful film about the birth of Christianity in Hawaii. I went with a group of my Native Hawaiian friends and all of them were crying. The Savior of the world came to Hawaii and because of it, Hawaii became a Christian nation. If you’re not a Believer, I totally understand you may not like the fact that Hawaii was a Christian nation, but guess what? It’s no longer a Christian nation – like like America is no longer a Christian nation. 99% of the TV shows and movies you watch are not Christian, but you still get upset at the one single movie that embraces Christ? Very sad. And as Jesus himself said, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” Matthew 7:13. My hope and prayer is you find the narrow path that will lead to eternal salvation. Don’t wait another minute. There’s no guarantee about tomorrow.
